English Study Tour 2010 |
| |
The study tour to Cairns, Australia was conducted successfully between 10th July and 23rd July 2010. 18 students from Form 2 to Form 4 participated in the tour and it was escorted by our English teachers Mr Wong and Miss Kwong.
Besides English classes, a wide variety of activities were arranged to let students learn about Australian culture (see the itinerary below).
Homestay Families
The homestay arrangement gave students precious opportunity to completely immerse in the local culture and to make friends with local people. |

My host family took me to the Kangaroo Park today and I saw over 1000 kangaroos there. It was just amazing! (James Kong) |
The girl in my host family Sara is very different from the children in Hong Kong. She is very active and she likes playing football. (Andrew Lo) |
We went to the backyard to feed the animals today. I fed the cow, horse, dogs and chickens. It was so much fun living on a farm. (Moody Kong) |
Excursions
The weekend excursions and after-school visits to the local museum, gallery, golf center, library and the fruit market were also valuable opportunities for students to learn about Australian lifestyle, history and culture and gain first-hand experience of using local facilities. |
We paid AUS$16 to take a picture with a koala. We also fed kangaroos and touched them. Their fur was soft. (Kristy Luk) |
I went snorkelling on Green Island. I like this sport very much as I like to see fish and the sea. (Gloria Lee) |
We went to Rusty’s Markets today. There were lots of local fruit and vegetables. (Miki Chan) |
| ESL Class |
My teacher Marc was really funny! He always shared some funny things with us and made us laugh. He also taught us how to say ‘How are you’ to Australians: ‘G’day mate’. (James Kong) |
First we had a painting lesson. We decorated the boomerang. The teacher also taught us how to play the didgeridoo. (Coby Siu) |
Our teacher taught us some interesting things about the aboriginal culture today, for example, armaments, stones and emu eggs, etc. These things have a long history. (Rachel Wong) |
Buddy Program
The buddy program at Cairns State High School allowed students to participate in class activities at a local school and make acquaintance with local peers. Some students still keep contact with their buddy via email. |
Unlike us, students here seldom use books. They mainly take notes in class.? (James Kong) |
The school here is really different. Students come from all over the world, for example, Australia, Thailand, China, Japan, Germany, etc. It’s a special experience to communicate with people from different backgrounds. (Gloria Lee) |
Most students enjoyed the cultural workshops conducted at Cairns College of English in which they learnt more about the aboriginal culture and Australian slang.
All the participants, including teachers and students, found the trip a fruitful learning experience and have gained rich knowledge in both English language and Australian culture.
